Do you eat to live, or live to eat?

Hey, you: do you eat to live, or live to eat?

Seems obvious. Almost insulting. *Of course* you eat to live. Right?

Now imagine this exchange with a high school student who is working hard to get into a good college.

- Why are you working hard?

- To go to college.

- Why go to college?

- To get a job.

- Why get a job?

- To get money.

- Why get money?

- To get food.

- Why get food?

- To be alive!

- Why be alive?

- …

I think a lot of people get caught up in the game of life, doing all kinds of things, without ever thinking about why they want to be alive. I know I do.

You say you eat to live. So what do you live to do?

Once you have an answer to that, you can let it guide your actions. You can feel fulfilled about getting that job, making that money, doing whatever it is you need to do.  You can play the game.

This post was inspired by a podcast series I listened to this morning at the gym, called 48 Ways to Wisdom by Rabbi Noah Weinberg. Nothing like hitting the gym with a good self-help podcast to give your biceps and your soul a solid workout at the same time. :)
